Freshman Retreat: Different Notes, One Melody
March 19, 2008

Prep held its 8th Freshman Retreat, and this year’s retreat theme was: Different Notes, One Melody.

The two day event was led by a dedicated group of Juniors & Seniors who trained for this job since the fall. The Class of 2011 watched a movie, had small group discussions, recreation, prayer, meals at Prep family homes, and celebrated mass together.  They explored their faith lives, learned more about deepening friendships, & gained self-knowledge.  For many past participants the retreat solidified their feeling of being a member of Prep – something they will value for the rest of their lives.  Prep’s Faculty & Administration did an outstanding job in assisting the 2 days of activities planned by seniors Ken Jordan and Brett Niehaus (senior co-captains), Mr. Gualtiere and Fr. Ryan. Also, a big thank you to Mr. Schuchert and Dr. Miller who led our reconciliation services; the numerous faculty who gave faith talks; the Prep families who hosted dinners and Mr. Mauritz, who gave a special talk to the freshmen.  Finally, Campus Ministry would like to thank the many Jesuits of the Fairfield Community who helped during Reconciliation. We look forward to another great retreat next year. Thank you and video acknowledgement to senior Tim Burke.

Father-Son Communion Breakfast
February 4, 2008

On Sunday, February 3 Prep celebrated their annual father-son communion breakfast. The event organized by the Father’s Club began with a liturgy in the Egan Chapel. Mass was celebrated by Fairfield Prep’s President, Fr. Jack Hanwell, SJ. Con-celebrant Fr. Charlie Allen, SJ gave a brief homily and then Mr. Elliott Gualtiere, Director of Campus Ministry, gave a personal reflection on his own perspective of fatherhood including his relationship with his two young sons. The group then shared a meal together back in the Prep cafeteria. Tom Walsh, member of the Father’s Club and Prep parent of Chris ’10, then introduced Fr. Allen, the keynote speaker. Fr. Allen’s comments were directed to the Prep students in attendance but all in attendance could relate to Fr. Allen’s poignant words. He spoke on five key points: have a vision; start thinking about getting a job; the transition back and forth between bureaucracy and family and back again; die young as late in life as possible; pretend to be religious. This was a wonderful event and special thanks to all who made it possible.

Prep Game to be Televised on MSG
September 15, 2007

NEWS FROM THE SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT CONFERENCE

For Immediate Release: September 15, 2007
Contact: Al Carbone, Commissioner (203) 671-4421

FAIRFIELD PREP-SHELTON FOOTBALL MATCHUP WILL BE TELEVISED ON MSG September 28 contest is Snapple High School Football Game of the Week.

Fairfield Prep and Shelton, the defending Southern Connecticut Conference Division I West football co-champions, will meet on Friday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. at Finn Stadium. The divisional game will be televised on MSG as the Snapple High School Football Game of the Week. The game will air on MSG on Sunday, September 30. Check your local listings for the time.

Led by head coach Jeff Roy, Shelton (1-0) is ranked in the top ten in all of the state’s preseason polls. The Gaels defeated West Haven, 49-24, in its 2007 season opener on September 14. Shelton (8-3 a year ago) tied Fairfield Prep for the Division I West crown (3-1) and earned a berth in the Class LL state playoffs before falling to Southington.

Directed by head coach Rich Magdon, Fairfield Prep (1-0) opened the 2007 season in fine fashion by blanking Wilbur Cross, 28-0, on September 14. The Jesuits, 8-3 last year, also reached the CIAC Class LL semifinals before falling to eventual champion Greenwich.

Last year, Fairfield Prep defeated Shelton, 14-9, in their regular season meeting in Fairfield. Shelton had won the previous two meetings (31-0 in 2004 and 10-0 in 2005).

“Mike Quick and MSG do a great job covering high school sports in the tri-state area and I’m pleased they’ve chosen this game – an important SCC match up between two traditionally strong football programs,” SCC Commissioner Al Carbone said. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase both schools and our conference, and of course, what a thrill for the student-athletes to play in front of a TV audience.”
